The Namesake (2006) is a film directed by Mira Nair, based upon a screenplay by Sooni Taraporevala. It is based upon the novel The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. The filming has wrapped up, and it is expected to be released in September to November 2006 after a debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Story

Template:Spoiler The Namesake describes the struggles between first generation Bengali immigrants to the United States and their children. The story begins as Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli leave Kolkata, India and settle in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Through a series of errors, their son's nickname, Gogol, becomes his official birth name, an event which will shape many aspects of his life.

A glance at the cast of characters and remarks by Kal Penn in his blog imply that the character "Dmitri" has been replaced by a presumably French character "Pierre." Another notable absence is the character Ruth with whom Gogol is romantically involved.
