Due to the over crowding at Socastee High, and the growth and development in the South Myrtle Beach area, Horry County School officials decided to build a new high school in the Burgess area of the county. The county wanted to open South Strand High School, but a group of students, parents and community leaders formed a committee to select the school name, colors, and mascot. St. James High School opened to students in 2003. St. James Elementary, Burgess Elementary, Seaside Elementary, & St. James Middle School feed into St. James High.
