Shofner was a five time Pro Bowler in 1958, 1959, and from 1961 to 1963.

Shofner played college football in Baylor University and was also a punter early in his pro football career.

Injuries and illness caused a decline in his effectiveness in 1964 and he never regained his former role as a starting split end after that. He retired after the 1967 season.
