The 2023 final will be a repeat of the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final which saw South Africa win 15–12, whilst the two sides have met in five previous World Cup encounters with New Zealand winning three and South Africa winning two. This will be the first time that both teams arrive at the final having already lost a game during the World Cup. For New Zealand this will be a record fifth appearance in a final, whilst South Africa make a fourth appearance and also enter having never lost in a final. The final will see one of the sides win a record fourth World Cup title, with both sides already won the World Cup on three previous occasions; New Zealand (1987, 2011 & 2015), South Africa (1995, 2007, 2019).
