Because of their placement alongside article text, navigation sidebars have to be of limited width, otherwise they take up too much of the page, and pinch the article text, making it unreadable. Fixed width elements inside of navigation sidebars cause much of the problem, and so fixed width elements need to be controlled and reduced. Sidebar elements of text may be fixed width, but can be controlled by inserting <nowiki><br/></nowiki> (break) tags, causing text to return to a new line. Links have to be piped before inserting <nowiki><br/></nowiki> tags:
<nowiki>[[Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation|Constitution of the <br/>United Nations Educational, <br/>Scientific and Cultural Organisation]]</nowiki>
andbut oftenfirst simplifedtry simplifying the visible link text to remove superfluous elements:
<nowiki>[[Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation|UN Constitution, <br/>Educational, Scientific, Cultural]]</nowiki>
The usage of table columns in navigation sidebars often causes the sidebar to be wider than normal ([[Syrian Civil War|example]]), and technical coordination is required to form rules and make changes which limit the usage of columns.
