Gemmill returned to Nottingham Forest to be a coach alongside [[Brian Clough]] in 1984. Later he joint [[manager (association football)|managed]] [[Rotherham United F.C.|Rotherham United]] for two seasons in the mid-1990s with ex-Forest team mate, John McGovern. They won the Football League Trophy in 1996 beating [[Shrewsbury Town]] 2-1 in the final with both their goals scored by another ex-Forest player, [[Nigel Jemson]].
