It is a [[:wikt:right bank|right]] tributary of the [[Khopyor River]] (a tributary of the [[Don River (Russia)|Don River]]). The Savala is {{convert|285 |km|mi}} in lengthlong, with a [[drainage basin]] of {{convert|7720 km²|km2|mi2}}. It flows over the southern part of the Oka-Don plain. Its main tributary is the [[Yelan River]]. Most of the rivers waters are from melting snow. Its average discharge is 20 m³/s. It freezes over in late November, and stays icebound until the spring thaw starts in late March / early April. The town of [[Zherdevka]] is situated by the banks of the Savala.
