In July 2023, Rex Andrew Heuermann, a 59-year-old Nassau County resident, was arrested in midtown Manhattan and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and a lesser charge of three counts of second-degree murder. Related to the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello.[28] He was also named as the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and in January 2024 was charged with her murder.
