Banton grew up in the [[Smithfield, Toronto|Mount Olive]] area in the [[Rexdale]] neighbourhood of [[Toronto]]. He began playing basketball as a kid at the North Kipling Community Centre, the Rexdale Community Hub, and a local parking lot.
