In the 1950s, Holden had an extra martial affair with Grace Kelly during the production of The Country Girl (1954). He also had an affair with Audrey Hepburn. A decade later, Holden tried to re-kindle the affair with Hepburn while co-starring with her in Paris When It Sizzles (1964) but this was to no avail as Hepburn was then a married woman.

Holden met French actress Capucine in the early 1960s. The two starred in the films The Lion (1962) and The 7th Dawn (1964). They reportedly began a two-year affair, which is alleged to have ended due to Holden's alcoholism.<ref>Osborne, Robert (host).
