The firm was established as the first domestic life insurance company in the Philippines with Antonio Ma. Barretto as its founding President. Its first headquarters were located at the Lack and Davies Building in Manila's Echague district. In 1934, it inaugurated its first building in Binondo, Manila. Insular Life established an overseas branch in Honolulu in 1934, and its first district office in Cebu City in 1938. During the Second World War, the company continued operations and took over the business of the Filipinas Life Assurance Company. The Philippines business of the Occidental Life Insurance Company of California was acquired by the company in 1954. A few years later in 1958, it introduced industrial life insurance in the Philippines.<ref name="Historical_Marker-2010">{{Cite sign |title= Insular Life |date=2010 |type=Historical Marker|publisher =[[National Historical Commission of the Philippines]]|location=Insular Life Corporate Center, Muntinlupa, Philippines|access-date=24 December 2021|url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Insular_Life_historical_marker.jpg}}</ref>
