We could use a pronoun, namely "it", but to redefine the flint in a more compelling way, as with "the stone", which, though more or less ubiquitous, can nevertheless be an interesting callback to the fact that it is a *material*, one which has species... you get it. It sounds cool and this reminds the reader that the stone that is flint IS cool. It does amazing things. It is beautiful. The stone. undo
