The papers in these proceedings were contributed for presentation at the 1981 ACM International Conference on Management of Data, Ann Arbor, Michigan, April 29-May 1. The conference was sponsored by the Special Interest Group for Management of Data (SIGMOD) of the Association for Computing Machinery.In response to our call for papers, 93 full-length papers were submitted. Each paper was referred by at least two members of the program committee and evaluated according to its originality, readability, significance of contribution and relevance to the area of database management. The full program committee and the conference chairman met on January 17, 1981 and selected 25 papers based on the referee reports.The conference program also includes nine panel sessions. For future references, we list the titles and the chairpersons at the end of this volume.
