Pallone on the Supreme Court’s Ruling on Access to Emergency Abortion Care

June 27, 2024

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today following the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in Moyle v. United States:

“It’s a relief, at least for now, patients in Idaho can continue to receive abortion care in emergency situations. However, it’s deeply troubling the Supreme Court has chosen to kick the can down the road rather than clearly affirm doctors should never be locked up for saving the lives of their patients.

“Unfortunately, this decision will be of little comfort to doctors who will continue to have to second-guess their medical judgment and send women home until their condition is nearly fatal before they can provide lifesaving care. This is sadly what reproductive health care has been reduced to as extreme right-wing elected officials continue their crusade to make abortion, birth control, and IVF treatment illegal.

“It’s also alarming, that for a second time, a key Supreme Court decision on reproductive rights was prematurely leaked in as many years. It is increasingly apparent the Supreme Court is acting in the political interests of the Republican Party. It is also appalling and demoralizing that women are kept apprised of the scope of their reproductive rights via draft opinions leaked on the internet.

“This is too important, and this madness must come to an end. And the only way we can stop it is if Democrats are empowered to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to enshrine Roe’s protections in federal statute. We must put an end to the right-wing criminalization of reproductive health care that endangers the lives of patients.”
