Pallone on Anniversary of the Dobbs Decision

June 24, 2024

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today on the second anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and cleared the way for Republican states to restrict reproductive health care across the country:

“Two years ago today, extremists on the Supreme Court ended 50 years of reproductive freedom in America with the Dobbs decision. When six unelected Justices overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, it was the first time a constitutional right was stripped away and it opened the floodgates for right-wing Republicans to pass abortion bans nationwide.

“Since the Dobbs decision, 14 states have passed total abortion bans, and nearly half of states have extreme restrictions on the books today. That’s why I am fighting alongside my Democratic colleagues in Congress to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and establish a federal right to abortion.

“While abortion remains legally accessible in New Jersey for now, our health care providers are working long hours to care for women who have been forced by Republicans to travel out of state to obtain care. As if that wasn’t harmful enough, Congressional Republicans are also actively working to restrict access to birth control and fertility treatment, further threatening reproductive rights. As we mark the anniversary of this shameful Supreme Court decision, it’s clearer than ever that Congress must act to stop the madness by restoring comprehensive reproductive health care protections nationwide, including the right to abortion, contraception, and IVF services.”
