Description
English: A service to honor all Americans who have died in time of War was held at Old St Paul’s historic church in Wellington for Memorial Day 31 May 2010. The service was arranged by the New Zealand American Association in close collaboration with the U.S. Embassy. Ambassador Huebner (who was attending Samoa’s National Day) was represented by Charge d’ Affairs Mr. Bob Clark, Defense Attaché Captain Dawn Driesbach gave the Memorial Day Address and the service was lead by Rev. Cannon Richard Simpson. The Chair of the New Zealand American Association Mr. Greg Crott began the service with a welcome and remarks. The New Zealand government was represented by the Minister of Defence, Dr. Wayne Mapp, the New Zealand Defence Force by Lieutenant – General Jerry Mateparae with all NZDF Section Chiefs and many other NZDF staff, The Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association, Mayor Jenny Rowan of Kapiti Coast District Council attended with the Secretary of Kapiti US Marines Trust Allie Webber and Marines writer Joan Ellis who, along with Mayor Jenny Brash of the City of Porirua represented the areas where US Marines were stationed in camps in WWII. This year the event involved many young New Zealanders: Air Force Cadets from No 49 Squadron Paraparaumu and representatives from Scouts New Zealand and GirlGuiding New Zealand formed a guard of honor for the wreath laying ceremony. U.S. Marines Guard from US Embassy presented their colors, baritone Zane Te Wiremu Jarvis with Cheryl Hollinger (trumpet) from New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and David Trott (organ) performed “Now is the Hour” and American patriotic music played during the wreath laying ceremony that included floral tributes from American citizens living in Wellington, the US Embassy, The Government and People of New Zealand, The Opposition, The New Zealand Defence Force, The Royal New Zealand and Returned Services Association, The Kapiti Coast District Council and the New Zealand American Association. At the end of the service LAC (Leading Aircraftsman) Slade Hocking of the Central Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force played TAPS.
