中文（繁體）：錐麓古道最早以前是台灣原住民作為橫跨中央山脈的一條路徑，用於打獵或造訪其他部落之用。到了日本統治時期，日本人更進一步招募了原住民整修與擴建步道，除了作為戰爭之用，另一個目的則是提供來台的日本旅客休憩與健行之用。
English: Originally, this trail was part of a longer cross-island mountain pass built by indigenous groups in the area. In fact, you can still find remnants of their settlements and market outposts along the path. Later, the Japanese recruited tribe members to further develop the trail to serve two purposes during colonial times: 1) to provide the Japanese military an outpost to subdue native settlements in the Taroko region, and 2) to utilize as a trekking location for Japanese tourists.
