Nearby Churchill, Manitoba, at the mouth of the Churchill River, is now Canada's only port on the Arctic Ocean, that is connected to the North American rail grid.
Originally a rail line was to have run to Port Nelson, at the mouth of the Nelson River. A channel was to have been dredged down the middle of the river, to a long pier, from shore. That pier is pictured here.
However, after construction began, it was realized that the Nelson not only carried much more water than the Churchill, its waters were far siltier, and dredging to keep the channel navigable would be a constant problem.
