Afrikaans: 'n Gravure wat die uitgewer H. Soeteboom berei het vir die joernaal van Willem van West-Zanen, skipper van die Bruinvis (c. 1602), wat die buitmaak van Dodo's afbeeld (middel links afgebeeld as pikkewynatig), 'n Doegong (Dugong dugong) en Thirioux se gryspapegaai (Psittacula bensoni) (onder).[1] Reisigers na Mauritius het vertel hoe maklik dit was om die papegaaie te vang, deur naamlik een vas te hou en te laat skree, wat dan 'n hele swerm sou aanlok, soos in die gravure aangetoon. Willem van West-Zanen meld in sy reisverslag dat sy skeepslui in een dag 50 voëls aan boord geneem het, waaronder 24 of 25 Dodo's, wat volgens hom so groot was, dat slegs twee die hele bemanning kon voed.[2] |
