Description
English: The Caterpillar is back! Now with hydrogen-alpha for that pink glow. You may have previously seen it here or in any of the other websites that host these press releases. This is a new version featuring data captured last December (2018).

The really cool thing about these very young stellar objects is that we can actually see changes in the nebula as the process occurs, because accretion of dust and gas casts shadows which change within months or years, a very human-friendly timescale. In this case the glowing fan of light in the "head" of the caterpillar got quite a bit brighter.

This particular kind of star-forming blob has been dubbed a frEGG, or free-floating Evaporating Gaseous Globule. It's currently being blown into this long shape by some very large, bright, and hot stars over a dozen light years away. If you want to read more, I recommend clicking the link.
