Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built between 250 and 150 BCE, this earthwork was constructed as a burial mound by the indigenous Adena Culture, and is the namesake of the city of Moundsville, West Virginia. The mound today stands 62 feet (19 meters) tall and 240 feet (73 meters) in diameter, being the largest mound structure by height and diameter in the Ohio River Valley, and standing taller than the massive historic West Virginia Penitentiary across the street. The mound was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The mound today is on the grounds of the Delf Norona Museum, opened in 1978, which interprets the history of the site and has a large collection of artifacts from the mound and the surrounding area.
