  • Note: East Lynne is a “sensation novel” originally serialized in The New Monthly under editor William Harrison Ainsworth, beginning in January 1861. The novel was rejected by two publishers before being accepted by Richard Bentley. East Lynne was popularized as a play, “apparently” first stage in Brooklyn on January 26, 1863: “In any given week for more than forty years, some version of the drama inspired by Ellen Wood’s book was probably seen by an audience somewhere in England or North America."
