Text Appearing Before Image:
ehead of Abraham is alreadyconceived in its sense: in thisold mans head is already some-thing of Michelangelos terri-bilita (Fig.22). There is muchin the execution, for which noanalogy can be found in theworks of Donatello, which havehitherto been mentioned. Thisapplies to the drapery as well, asto the nude, but above all to thegeneral treatment which accen-tuates the decorative charactermore, than his preceding works. The same may be said of Abrahams neighbour, who has been christenedsometimes as Joshua, sometimes as Moses (Fig. 23). Bode thereforeconcludes, that this work as well represents the united efforts of Rossoand Donatello. Among the whole series this figure surprises by thespirituality of its motif Life does not radiate from it as actively, ashitherto. In deep thought the prophet rests his bearded head upon hisright hand and gathers up the wide cloak, as though he wanted to shuthimself off from the outer world. This is directly reminiscent of antiquestatues of philosophers.
