Nederlands: rammelaar. Rammelaar van kalebas, 'asson' genaamd,versierd met een netwerk van kralen. Het is het belangrijkste attribuut van een vodou-priester en is tevens een statussymbool. Als iemand priester is geworden, zeggen ze in Haïti: 'hij heeft de asson opgepakt'. Met het gerammel van de 'asson' roept de priester de 'Lwa'.
Vodou is de officiëlle godsdienst van het land Haïti en is gebaseerd op West-Afrikaanse religies die door de slavernij in Haïti en andere Caraïbische landen terecht is gekomen. De goden van de religie worden geuit als geestwezens en worden 'Lwa's' genoemd. De vele 'Lwa's' zijn ingedeeld in verschillende naties, waarvan de bekendste de 'Rada Lwa's', de koele, en de 'Petro Lwa's', de hete, zijn. De religie bestaat uit vele rituelen die geleid worden door priesters en die verbonden zijn aan de Lwa en aan de gunst die men verzoekt. Tijdens de rituelen kunnen de priesters in trance raken doordat de 'Lwa' bezit neemt van het lichaam. |
