| Description | Chimpanzees chilling out in their enclosure. Chimpanzee, sometimes colloquially chimp, is the common name for the two hominid species of apes in the genus Pan. The Congo River forms the boundary between the native habitats of the two species. Chimpanzees are members of the Hominidae family, along with gorillas, orangutans and humans. Chimpanzees split from the human branch of the family about four to six million years ago. The two chimpanzee species are the closest living relatives to humans. Despite being probably the most amusing and endearing of the apes, barring orangutans, chimpanzees can at times be unpredictable and dangerous and ahe been know to attack humans. And although primarily herbivorous, groups of chimps at times track down, kill and eat the young of lesser monkey species in the forests of Africa. (Al Ain, Dec. 2012) |
