Athenaeum Club [pencil annotation in HWL Dana hand: London]
Dec. 3d 1838
Dear Sir, [pencil annotation in HWL Dana hand: “[to Bentley, the British Publisher]”]
Before leaving America my friends entrusted to me a couple of works, which they wished me to endeavor to get republished in England. One is a novel called The Slave, & the object of which is to [p. 2] illuminate the unhappy state of Slavery. Another work is “Academical Lectures on the Jewish Scriptures & Antiquities,” of which only one vol. has been published. The work will be comprised in four vols, though the first vol. is complete [p. 3] by itself. Allow me to ask you to look at these books, which I take the liberty of sending herewith, & to let me know as soon as is convenient, if you should be willing to undertake the republication of one or both of them.
[p. 4] I have taken a great liberty in thus addressing you. My friend Mr. Hayward has given me a note of introduction, which is enclosed, upon the strength of which I have ventured to address you.
My friend Mr. Longfellow, author of Outre Mer wished me to make inquiry of [p. 5] you with regard to the success, or failure of his book which you published a couple of years ago.
I have the honor to be,
Dear Sir
Very truly yours,
Charles Sumner
