Unknown, restorer: Alessandro Algardi (Italian, 1598–1654)
Description
English: Athena. The statue was found in 1627 in fragments at the Campus Martius, near Santa Maria sopra Minerva. It probably represented Hygieia but was restored as an Athena by Alessandro Algardi to oblige his patron, Cardinal Ludovisi. Original parts (torso, lower body and snake): marble; restored elements (mainly head and aegis): Carrara marble.
Français : Athéna. La statue a été découverte en morceaux en 1627, sur le Champ de Mars (près de Santa Maria sopra Minerva). Elle représentait probablement Hygie mais fut resraurée par l'Algarde comme une Athéna, sur demande de son protecteur, le cardinal Ludovisi. Parties originales (torse, bas du corps et serpent) en marbre, éléments restaurés (principalement la tête et l'égide) en marbre de Carrare.
