Description |
This canvas is a rare example of Alonso Cano’s work in painted portraiture. It was executed between 1657-1660, which corresponds to the painter’s second stay in Madrid. This period remains one of the artist’s least well known and most fascinating and is typified by a painting style of loose brushstrokes, vibrancy in skin tones and minimal interplay between highlights and shadows.
