The Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorers mission was a German-US-UK mission launched in 1984 to study the Earth’s magnetosphere. The mission consisted of three spacecraft – the Ion Release module, the Charge Composition Explorer and the UK sub-satellite (UKS), which was built at MSSL and RAL. The mission exploded canisters of Lithium and Barium in the magnetosphere to follow their evolution, including an ‘artificial comet’ before the real comet Halley visited with Giotto in 1986. The UCL-MSSL led ion instrument measured ions, including newly born pickup ions from the releases, and contributed to pioneering studies of reconnection in the magnetosphere. |
