District names

When you move categories, you must move all subcategories too, and you must update Wikidata items too. Otherwise, the whole navigation system will be broken, which already happened to some Russian districts where we have strongly rely on Wikidata for sorting WLE images. --Alexander (talk) 04:39, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander - The categories for Russia are a mess. I adjusted many to the standard names as presented in the English Wikipedia. I don't think I must update all. Regarding updates in Wikidata - after a move, in case a WD item was attached, it always said something like "the WD item will be updated soon". FreightXPress (talk) 05:24, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's true what Alexander told you. You created only empty categories. Stop it ! And then: the English Wikipedia cannot be the standard for all other Wikipedias. In Commons there are no general rules on the use of parentheses, or commas: the standard (coherence) must be inside of the same country, between all categories of the same nation. Finally, if you want to make so broad and radical changes, it needs a discussion about it. Thank you. --DenghiùComm (talk) 07:56, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
DenghiùComm - "You created only empty categories." - This is a lie. E.g. Category:Lagunillas Municipality, Zulia. Stop it! With regard to Russia my "radical changes" where to adjust categories to the standard given by Category Russia for protected areas. E.g. in Category:Istrinsky District there was "XYZ, Istra district" "XYZ (Istrinsky District)" and "XYZ (Istra district)". I chose the English Wikipedia name which was also given by the protected areas tree, namely "Istrinsky District". Regarding "And then: the English Wikipedia cannot be the standard for all other Wikipedias." - I did change in Commons, not in other Wikipedias. And Commons uses English. Regarding "In Commons there are no general rules on the use of parentheses, or commas: the standard (coherence) must be inside of the same country, between all categories of the same nation." - I saw many examples where this was not true. But I didn't standardize that. Maybe before attacking another user next time, you look better what the user has done and how things work. FreightXPress (talk) 08:09, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

FreightXPress, your edits are not meaningful. There are no other entities named Cova Lima or Manufahi. It is useless to name the categories Cova Lima district or Manufahi district. Anyhow, you didn't updated all Wikidata and the links inside Wikipedia articles. Before starting such big changes, you should discuss your ideas on the discussion pages. --JPF (talk) 09:04, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commons categories are stored as P373 property of Wikidata. It is not updated automatically. Unfortunately, now we don't even know which Wikidata items need update, so your edits are really ruining the whole system, including the categorization of WLE photos in Russia and perhaps in other countries as well.

Ymblanter, Rubin16 and other admins, would it be possible to revert all edits in question automatically? We planned to make categories for Russian districts coherent with their names in English Wikipedia, but this should be done carefully. Wikidata items and subcategories here should be updated too. --Alexander (talk) 10:29, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Same request for East Timor districts. It is all going into a big mess. --JPF (talk) 11:07, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
By the way: You are doing exact the same things, User:Tamawashi did in June 2014. It made just the same problems. --JPF (talk) 11:15, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Changes made on Italian district names have already been rollbacked. --DenghiùComm (talk) 11:19, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alexander - can you say which edits for Russian entities where problematic? I standardized towards the names in English Wikipedia, so bots can find the connections, even for those commons categories that do not yet exist in WD. I also updated Ukrainian and Belarusian districts. Several of the Russians had "rayon".
  • JPF - it was "Category:Cova Lima (District)" - this is never done that way. Either use "Category:Cova Lima (district)", or "Category:Cova Lima District". I did not add the "District" there.
  • DenghiùComm - which ones where problematic?

Districts of Barcelona

Most of the districts of Barcelona do not have the word "District" at the English wikipedia page names. It is only added when a disambiguation is needed. This only happens with "Les Corts", which is both a district and also a neighborhood. You have added "District" to all the 10 districts at commons. Why? Is there a specific reason? --Jordiferrer (talk) 11:38, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

On top of that, Eixample District is an ambiguous name. It can refer to the district located in Barcelona or in Valencia. See: Category:Eixample (Valencia). A better and more clear name is Category:Eixample (Barcelona).--Jordiferrer (talk) 11:43, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. Then please look at Category:Maps of Eixample, Category:Streets in Eixample and tell me what that is about? FreightXPress (talk) 11:48, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Jordiferrer - I created a dab page, to prevent that someone will use that name again: Category:Eixample District. FreightXPress (talk) 11:52, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Because, it is about the districts. There are other meanings of the words. The scope of Commons is much larger than that of English Wikipedia. See for example: ca:Sant Andreu. FreightXPress (talk) 11:46, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
