CEDAW, full name Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, is an international treaty adopted on 18 December 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly. Described as an international bill of rights for women, it was instituted on 3 September 1981 and has been ratified by 189 states. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (OP-CEDAW) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 6 October 1999 and went in force on 22 December 2000. The Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW Committee) monitors Parties' compliance to the Convention.
