Overwriting images

Please don't overwrite images unless it's a really obvious improvement. Certainly don't do it for a different crop. Upload it under a different name and then provide a link under the "other versions" parameter in the description. Thanks...Chowbok 01:09, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't waste my time modifying images unless it is an obvious improvement. Why on Earth did you revert it? The contrast on that photo of Jerry Siegel was lousy, it was littered with specks, and a portrait that focuses more attention on the man's tie than on his face looks amateurish. Keeping the badly-cropped version around as you suggest serves no purpose, because the replacement is clearly a better-looking image, and the original one would just be orphaned when I finished substituting it on the other Wikis. - JasonAQuest 01:58, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia serves other purposes than just the Wikis. There's no harm in having both crops available. Thanks.Chowbok 03:36, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I was unware that it was a goal of Wikimedia to provide inferior and redundant - and therefore pretty much useless - images as well as the good ones. The "harm" comes from the time I'm going to have to waste going through the other Wikipedias, and from the accumulation of worthless cruft. - JasonAQuest 16:48, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

In the book Holroyd doesn't specify the source of the pictures but he does thank James Strachey for "making accesible a formidable mass of unpublished material". I had never seen those pictures before and they probably belong to Lytton Strachey's personal collection. I emailed Paul Levy last year, he is co-literary executor (with Holroyd) of Lytton Strachey's estate and he is trustee of the Strachey Trust. He said that its hard to determine the owners of the pictures but that "The Strachey Trust has however no objection in principle to the images being stored in this way and, insofar as it has any authority in the matter, is happy to give its permission. The Trust however makes no claim and gives no assurance that it has such authority and it remains your responsibility to ensure that any permissions which may be required from third parties is obtained."
