Description
English: Built in 1866-1876, this Gothic Revival-style prison was based on the Joliet Prison in Illinois, and was constructed using prison labor. The building features a limestone exterior with crenellated parapets, cylindrical and octagonal towers, rough-hewn stone on the wings and smooth-faced stone on the front facade of the central wing, double-hung windows, a central four-story administrative wing with a gable parapet, porch with gothic arches and decorative columns, buttresses on the exterior facades of the prison wings, and large walled yards to the rear of the building. The prison operated until 1995, when it closed, and inmates were transferred to more modern facilities elsewhere in the state. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and today serves as a prison guard training facility, tourist attraction with tours and haunted house events, a museum, and a filming location.
