In 1638, Louis XIII made the vow to put up a new high altar in Notre Dame, devoted to Virgin Mary, with at her feet a statue of himself offering his crown and sceptre. Louis XIII died before fulfilling his vow, and his son Louis XIV accomplished it for him some decades later.
