Buying seeds will keep your cost down and is easier than starting indoors and moving outdoors later. These are a few veggies I started outdoors this year directly outside. Most can be started even before the last frost. Spinach - can be started as soon as the soil can be worked, even a frost won't kill spinach Onions - I planted direct as bulbs Kale - directly sow seeds outdoors early spring Peas - can soak the seeds in water prior to planting for faster sprouting Beets - early spring Carrots Lettuce + arugula - most lettuce don't love extreme heat so start earlier as they will flower in high heat (I like to plant my lettuces in succession every few weeks so I have new lettuce all season) Broccoli - early spring - will also flower in extreme heat Asparagus - early spring Potatoes - I like to plant in pots so all the potatoes are easier to find!
