We recently helped Hillfield Strathallan College celebrate a lot of special moments in their latest issue of HSC Review. Specifically, 100 years since Strathallan School opened its doors to provide a space for girls to learn. These moments in HSC’s history would not have been possible without the people and women who led the charge. Monumental figures whose stories we got to tell.
We knew the cover and cover story needed to check a lot of boxes and this was going to get complex. Illustrator Joel Kimmel came to mind quite quickly as the right fit for this assignment. We began with thinking simple portraits, but as we dug into the story and process the client developed a robust laundry list of items to help fill out the package. Joel did a fantastic job supplying us with everything we needed to flow through the layout.
We’ve said it before, but the diversity in the stories our clients provide for their publications is absolutely incredible. While assigning illustrations here in Ontario, we were also researching and finding the right photographer to shoot a hockey team… in Nairobi, Africa.
We had no idea how assigning a hockey shoot with a local photographer in the Nairobi region would go (which was half the fun).
Long story short, the shoot turned out fantastic with photographer Eduardo Soteras Jalil capturing some really great moments with HSC alumnus Tim Colby , coach of Nairobi’s Ice Lions. Look the team up online, there are a couple great short films about the players and the team.
This issue didn’t let up! We also set up a shoot in New York to tell “Ontario’s Very Own” (Dr. Chethan Sathya’s) story. Dr. Chethan Sathya MD MSCE has been skyrocketing in his career and work with advocacy and awareness around gun violence and youth. We needed a photographer who could capture Dr. Sathya in the right tone. Somehow, Bryan Derballa was available. Yes, that Bryan Derballa (who isn't on Linkedin). Bryan has captured some of the most well-known faces for New York Times Magazine, WSJ and beyond, masterfully. We’re still blown away that we got to work with Bryan, and by the stunning shots he was able to get working with a BUSY doctor’s schedule.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention longtime studio friend Jaime Hogge and his help on the shoot with Travis Schneider , an entrepreneur who has been blazing his own path his entire career. In an issue like this, it’s really nice to have a trusted photographer who we can hand an assignment to knowing we’ll get the results we need. Thanks again, JH!
Finding collaborators who are the right fit for HSC Review is a key part of making a successful issue. We’re so glad we were able to help the client celebrate these big moments and tell these stories in captivating ways. As always, thank you again Katelyn Galer , Alex Berry and Berton Woodward for your trust and collaboration!
