Seis del Sur’s HISTORIAS: The Stories Behind the Images is an interactive multimedia exhibition that explores the collective’s early documentary photographs of The Bronx as well as those of friends and colleagues. Their images—many unseen and stretching back decades—reshape the borough’s narrative and personalize it with anecdotes about the images on display at The Bronx County Historical Society’s Museum of Bronx History.

The work of Seis del Sur founding members Joe Conzo, Jr., Ricky Flores, Ángel Franco, David González, Edwin Pagán and Francisco Molina Reyes II covers a range of social, cultural, and political issues affecting Bronxites over the last four decades as it informed our worldviews. In recent years they have dug deep into their archives, finding images for the show that have never been exhibited before.

The welcome addition of Carmen Mojica and Abigail Montes to the mix continues and expands the collective’s commitment to documenting and preserving our community and personal histories.

The Bronx Basketball Hall of Fame, curated by Derek Doward, CEO of The Bronx Basketball Hall of Fame, highlights the rich histories of basketball in The Bronx, starting from the very early years of the game up to the present, focusing on individuals who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Join The Bronx County Historical Society in the upper room of Poe Cottage for a new exhibit of the surrealist visual art of Margarita Deida Pietri, widow of leading Nuyorican poet Rev. Pedro Pietri (1944–2004). Margarita is exhibiting her visual art in conjunction with selections from Pedro’s poetry, paying homage to her and her late partner’s admiration for Edgar Allan Poe.

    Join The Bronx County Historical Society on Saturday, November 2, 2024 for a celebration of the closing of “The Surrealist Gypsy and The Poet” exhibit at Poe Cottage.

    Closing will be in observance of day of the dead, so costumes are encouraged.

    Closing will also involve live music, arts and crafts, local vendors, palm readings, book readings, free tours of the Cottage, poetry readings, and more.

    The Mott Haven History Keepers is an NEH-funded project of The Bronx County Historical Society, Mott Haven Oral History Project, and Incite at Columbia University.   • From Lofts to Living Quarters: Garment District Architecture and Workers Housing

    Join Historic Districts Council for in-depth exploration of how labor history and architectural history shaped the Garment District and the northeast Bronx neighborhood of Allerton, stitching these two neighborhoods together. Both the Garment District and Allerton are two historic sites celebrated by the Historic Districts Council this year as part of the “Six To Celebrate” program.

    Panelists include Andrew Scott Dolkart, an architectural historian and author of The Fabric of New York City’s Garment District: Architecture and Development in an Urban Cultural Landscape, and Steven Payne, Director of The Bronx County Historical Society, who is conducting a multiyear research project on the Allerton Coops. The panel will be moderated by Tessa Maffucci, fashion studies professor at Pratt Institute, and organizer of the New York Fashion Workforce Development Coalition.

    Whether you're interested in architecture, labor or civil rights history, or simply curious about the intersection of urban design and industry, this panel promises a fascinating discussion.
