The surface magnetization of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ was examined by low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) using an off-normal incidence electron beam. We found that the 180$^o$ domain walls are of Bloch type. Temperature-dependent LEEM measurements yield a surface magnetization with a surface critical exponent $β$1 = 0.79 +/- 0.02. This result is consistent with surface magnetism in the 3D semi-infinite Heisenberg ($β$1 = 0.84 +/- 0.01) or Ising ($β$1 = 0.78 +/- 0.02) models, which is distinctly different from the bulk exponent ($β$ = 0.34 +/- 0.07). The measurements reveal the power of LEEM with a tilted beam to determine magnetic domain structure in quantum materials. Single crystal diffraction measurements reveal inversion symmetry-breaking weak peaks and yield space group P-6m2. This Fe site defect-derived loss of inversion symmetry enables the formation of skyrmions in this Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ crystal.

We report a systematic investigation of anisotropic magnetocaloric effects in single crystal Cr$_2$Te$_3$. Single crystal samples are synthesized by chemical vapor transport and characterized by x-ray and Laue diffraction methods. The maximum magnetic entropy change $-ΔS_{\text M}^{\text{max}}$ is 4.50 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for the easy c-axis (3.36 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ for the hard ab-plane) and the relative cooling power RCP is 296.7 J kg$^{-1}$ for the easy c-axis (183.84 J kg$^{-1}$ for the hard axis ab-plane) near the Curie temperature for a magnetic field change of 9 T. The magneto-crystalline anisotropy constant K$_u$ is estimated to be 486.92 kJ m$^{-3}$ at 146 K, decreasing to 148.60 kJ m$^{-3}$ at 168 K. Meanwhile, the maximum of the rotational magnetic entropy change $ΔS_{\text M}^{\text R}(T, H)$ between the c-axis and the ab-plane is about 1.14 J kg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ for magnetic-field change of 9 T. The critical exponents are estimated by analyzing magnetocaloric effects, which indicate 2D-Ising type magnetic system. The accuracy of estimated critical exponents is verified by scaling analysis. The maximum magnetic entropy change $-ΔS_{\text M}^{\text{max}}$ $\approx$5.25 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ (along the c-axis) and the corresponding adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{\text{ad}}$ $\approx$3.31 K (along the c-axis) are estimated by analyzing heat capacity measurements with a magnetic field up to 9 Tesla.

A time-resolved synchrotron X-ray total scattering study sheds light on the evolution of the different structural length scales involved during the intercalation of the layered iron-selenide host by organic molecular donors, aiming at the formation of the expanded lattice $Li_x(C_5H_5N)_yFe_{2-z}Se_2$ hybrid superconductor. The intercalates are found to crystallize in the tetragonal $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure at the average level, however, with an enhanced interlayer iron-selenide spacing (d= 16.2 Å) that accommodates the heterocyclic molecular spacers. Quantitative atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis at variable times, suggests distorted $FeSe_4$ tetrahedral local environments that appear swollen with respect to those in the parent $β$-FeSe. Simultaneously acquired, in-situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data disclose that secondary phases ($α$-Fe and $Li_2Se$), grow significantly when higher Li-concentration is used in the solvothermal reaction or when the solution is aged. These observations are in line with the strongly reducing character of the intercalation medium's solvated electrons that mediate the defect chemistry of the expanded lattice superconductor. In the latter, intralayer correlated local distortions indicate electron donating aspects that reflect in somewhat enlarged Fe-Se bonds. They also reveal a degree of relief of chemical pressure associated with a large distance between Fe and Se sheets ('taller' anion height) and a stretched Fe-Fe square planar topology. The elongation of the latter, derived from the in-situ PDF study, speaks for a plausible increase in the Fe-site vacancy concentration. The evolution of the local structural parameters suggests an optimum reaction window where kinetically stabilized phases resemble the distortions of the edge-sharing Fe-Se tetrahedra, required for high-$T_c$ in expanded lattice iron-chalcogenides.

The local atomic structure of SnSe was characterized across its orthorhmbic-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition using x-ray pair distribution function analysis. Substantial Sn off-centering distortions persist in the high symmetry high temperature phase, with symmetry different from that of ordered distortions below the transition. The analysis implies that the transition is neither order-disorder nor displacive, but rather a complex crossover where the character of coupling changes from 3D-like at low temperature to 2D-like at high temperature. Robust ferro-coupled SnSe intra-layer distortions suggest a ferroelectric-like instability as the driving force. Complex local Sn off-centering is integral to the ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity mechanism in SnSe.

Of particular interest are 2DMM where spins can be manipulated by electrical conduction. Whereas Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ exhibits magnetic order in few-layer crystals, its large band gap inhibits electronic conduction. Here we show that the defect-induced short-range crystal order in Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ on the length scale below 0.6 nm induces substantially reduced band gap and robust semiconducting behavior down to 2 K that turns to metallic above 10 GPa. Our results will be helpful to design conducting state in 2DMM and call for spin-resolved measurement of the electronic structure in exfoliated ultrathin crystals.

For materials where spin-orbit coupling is competitive with electronic correlations, the spatially anisotropic spin-orbital wavefunctions can stabilize degenerate states that lead to many and diverse quantum phases of matter. Here, we find evidence for a dynamical spin-orbital state preceding a T$^*$=50 K order-disorder spin-orbital ordering transition in the $j\!=\!3/2$ lacunar spinel GaTa$_4$Se$_8$. Above T$^*$, GaTa$_4$Se$_8$ has an average cubic crystal structure, but total scattering measurements indicate local non-cubic distortions of Ta$_4$ tetrahedral clusters for all measured temperatures $2 < T < 300$ K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the dynamic nature of these local distortions through symmetry forbidden optical phonon modes that modulate $j\!=\!3/2$ molecular orbital occupation as well as intercluster Ta-Se bonds. Spin-orbital ordering at T$^*$ cannot be attributed to a classic Jahn-Teller mechanism and based on our findings, we propose that intercluster interactions acting on the scale of T$^*$ act to break global symmetry. The resulting staggered intercluster dimerization pattern doubles the unit cell, reflecting a spin-orbital valence bond ground state.

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T$_{c} = 2.5$K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), which categorize CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level ($E_F$), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high temperature charge density wave-like instability. The implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Connections between crystal chemistry and critical temperature $T_c$ have been in the focus of superconductivity, one of the most widely studied phenomena in physics, chemistry and materials science alike. In most Fe-based superconductors, materials chemistry and physics conspire so that $T_c$ correlates with the average anion height above the Fe plane, i. e. with the geometry of the FeAs4 or FeCh4 (Ch = Te, Se, or S) tetrahedron. By synthesizing Fe$_{1-y}$Se$_{1-x}$S$_x$ (0$\leq$$x$$\leq$1, $y$$\leq$0.1), we find that in alloyed crystals $T_c$ is not correlated with the anion height like it is for most other Fe superconductors. Instead, changes in $T_c$($x$) and tetragonal-to-orthorombic (nematic) transition $T_s$($x$) upon cooling are correlated with disorder in Fe vibrations in the direction orthogonal to Fe planes, along the crystallographic c-axis. The disorder stems from the random nature of S substitution, causing deformed Fe(Se,S)4 tetrahedra with different Fe-Se and Fe-S bond distances. Our results provide evidence of $T_c$ and $T_s$ suppression by disorder in anion height. The connection to local crystal chemistry may be exploited in computational prediction of new superconducting materials with Fe/S building blocks.

We report on the emergence of robust superconducting order in single crystal alloys of 2H-TaSe$_{2-x}$S$_{x}$ (0$\leq$x$\leq$2) . The critical temperature of the alloy is surprisingly higher than that of the two end compounds TaSe$_{2}$ and TaS$_{2}$. The evolution of superconducting critical temperature T$_{c} (x)$ correlates with the full width at half maximum of the Bragg peaks and with the linear term of the high temperature resistivity. The conductivity of the crystals near the middle of the alloy series is higher or similar than that of either one of the end members 2H-TaSe$_{2}$ and/or 2H-TaS$_{2}$. It is known that in these materials superconductivity (SC) is in close competition with charge density wave (CDW) order. We interpret our experimental findings in a picture where disorder tilts this balance in favor of superconductivity by destroying the CDW order.

Detailed structural measurements were conducted on a new perovskite, ScMnO3, and on orthorhombic LuMnO3. Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out, and predict that ScMnO3 possesses E-phase magnetic order at low temperature with displacements of the Mn sites (relative to the high temperature state) of ~0.07 Å, compared to ~ 0.04 Å predicted for LuMnO3. However, detailed local, intermediate and long-range structural measurements by x-ray pair distribution function analysis, single crystal x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, find no local or long- range distortions on crossing into the low temperature E-phase of the magnetically ordered state. The measurements place upper limits on any structural changes to be at most one order of magnitude lower than density functional theory predictions and suggest that this theoretical approach does not properly account for the spin-lattice coupling in these oxides and may possibly predict the incorrect magnetic order at low temperatures. The results suggest that the electronic contribution to the electrical polarization dominates and should be properly treated in theoretical models.

The local structure of the spinel LiRh$_2$O$_4$ has been studied using atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of powder x-ray diffraction data. This measurement is sensitive to the presence of short Rh-Rh bonds that form due to dimerization of Rh$^{4+}$ ions on the pyrochlore sublattice, independent of the existence of long range order. We show that structural dimers exist in the low-temperature phase, as previously supposed, with a bond shortening of $Δr \sim 0.15$ Å. The dimers persist up to 350 K, well above the insulator-metal transition, with $Δr$ decreasing in magnitude on warming. Such behavior is inconsistent with the Fermi surface nesting-driven Peierls transition model. Instead, we argue that LiRh$_2$O$_4$ should properly be described as a strongly correlated system.

The temperature evolution of structural effects associated with charge (CO) and spin order (SO) in La$_{1.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$NiO$_{4}$ has been investigated using neutron powder diffraction. We report an anomalous shrinking of the $c/a$ lattice parameter ratio that correlates with $T_{\rm CO}$. The sign of this change can be explained by the change in interlayer Coulomb energy between the static stripe-ordered state and the fluctuating stripe-ordered state or the charge-disordered state. In addition, we identify a contribution to the mean-square displacements of Ni and in-plane O atoms whose width correlates quite well with the size of the pseudogap extracted from the reported optical conductivity, with a non-Debye-like component that persists below and well above $T_{\rm CO}$. We infer that dynamic charge-stripe correlations survive to $T\sim2T_{\rm CO}$
