Chicago grants approvals to RIOS and Field Operations' $7bn The 1901 Project

The City of Chicago has granted approvals to the new $7 billion RIOS and Field Operations-led redevelopment of spaces surrounding the United Center. The 1901 Project, which covers 55 acres will be conducted in two phases through 2040, adds a new 6,000-seat music hall, 233-key boutique hotel, mixed-used building, and 10-acre public park in its first half followed by more retail, hospitality, office spaces, and a large housing component in the second.

The first phase of construction is scheduled to begin this year with a $400 million budget and progress through the end of 2028.

Take a peak inside Steven Holl's unique creative mind at the Tchoban Foundation's upcoming exhibition

Next month in Berlin, a must-see exhibition featuring the drawings and watercolors of architect Steven Holl will be held at the Tchoban Foundation's Museum for Architectural Drawing.

The exhibition, which begins February 7th, centers Holl’s 1988 Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek library as a focal point around which curator Kristin Feireiss chose from nearly 50,000 examples of his great oeuvre. Drawings for three of Holl’s unrealized projects—including the Palazzo del Cinema in Venice (1990) and Porta Vittoria in Milan (1986)—will provide another special incentive for visitors, along with a sketch for the new Ostrava Concert Hall in that his firm previewed in 2023.

Harvard GSD is getting ready for another semester of exciting guest lectures included in our Get Lectured roundup of events taking place on campus in the new academic term.

Starting off the Spring, will be the first Aga Khan Program Lecture from Souleymane Bachir Diagne on February 3. Following that are lectures from Dorte Mandrup (February 13); Deanna Van Buren (March 4); Princess Adedoyin Talabi Faniyi of Osogbo, Nigeria, and Tarna Klitzner for International Women’s Day (March 6); Jala Makhzoumi (March 11); and Minsuk Cho (March 13).

The semester continues with Maurice Cox’s discussion with the former Mayor of Chicago Lori Lightfoot on March 25. Los Angeles appoints Chief Recovery Officer to spearhead disaster rebuilding efforts

The City of Los Angeles’ Mayor Karen Bass has announced the appointment of developer Steve Soboroff to serve as the new Chief Recovery Officer to spearhead its response to wildfire disasters that destroyed over 12,000 structures in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena earlier this month. Soboroff, who in the past had been criticized for the environmental impact of his massive Playa Vista development on the city’s Westside, will be responsible for "recommending a comprehensive City strategy" and coordinating the now expedited rebuilding process for those in the affected areas.

He will also create an "all solutions in" resource-sharing system for commercial and residential rebuilds, in addition to a "detailed program" that covers the city's public libraries and parks systems.

In a brief statement, Soboroff said: "Our mission is to start building a clear, practical and doable path to the Palisades and everywhere help is needed in LA."

Construction starts down another 2% in December

The total number of construction starts decreased by 2% in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.2 trillion according to the latest Dodge Construction Network (DCN) survey.

Nonresidential building starts grew by 2%, nonbuilding starts were 14% lower, and residential building starts grew by 4%. On a year-to-date basis through December, total construction starts were up 6%, nonresidential starts were up 4%, residential starts were up 7%, and nonbuilding starts were up by 7%.

For the 12 months ending in December 2024, total construction starts were up 6% from the 12 months ending in December 2023. Residential starts were up 7%, nonresidential starts were up 4% and nonbuilding starts rose 7% over the same period.

Until two weeks ago, my wife Tomo and I had the great pleasure of being stewards of Whitney Smith's Holmes House. It was built by Jackson and Evelyn Holmes in 1941. In 2021, it became LA County Historic Landmark #8.

What made this house so special was not that it was gigantic, ostentatious, or glamorous, but that it was built for a middle-class family interested in the power of good design.

Trump’s temporary FEMA administrator appointee raises eyebrows

The new Trump administration’s temporary appointment as the lead administrator of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), former Navy SEAL veteran Cameron Hamilton, is raising eyebrows in the aftermath of the devastating Los Angeles Fires.

According to the New York Times: "Mr. Hamilton is an unusual choice to lead the agency, even in a temporary capacity. Since Hurricane Katrina, when the federal response was severely criticized, FEMA has been led by disaster management professionals who have run state or local emergency management agencies, or were regional administrators at FEMA."

Hamilton, who had previously worked as an emergency management specialist at the State Department, takes the helm of the agency after criticizing its response to last fall's flooding incident in western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene.

Noted memorial designer Liam O’Connor is named 2025 Driehaus Prize laureate

The University of Notre Dame has named Liam O’Connor and Philippe Rotthier as the laureates of this year’s Richard H. Driehaus Prize and Henry Hope Reed Award, respectively.

Known for his extensive body of work that includes the British Normandy Memorial in France, O’Connor, who was also previously a visiting professor at Notre Dame and Yale, was cited by School of Architecture dean Stefanos Polyzoides as producing several other important monuments that are "representation of deeper value and of national memory that is in enormously short supply these days."

The jury’s citation of the British-born Irish architect continued, "[His] memorial architecture is both classical and classic. It is classical since the language of the memorials refers to a specific historical period. Yet it is also classic because the collective memory it evokes as a ‘remembrance of things past’ and things to come transcends time, alas, for as long as we remain humans."

Zaha Hadid Architects renovates historic Rome structure as luxury hotel

Zaha Hadid Architects has completed the transformation of an existing historic structure into a luxury hotel in Rome. The Palazzo Capponi, located on the historic Via di Ripetta, draws inspiration from the city’s architectural heritage, focusing on the evolution of vaulted ceilings from ancient Roman to Baroque periods.

Originally constructed in the 16th century, the palazzo has undergone several modifications over the centuries. In the 1950s, two wings were added, and significant internal alterations were made to accommodate office spaces, leading to the displacement and overpainting of 17th-century frescoes which have now been restored and reinstated.

Daniel Libeskind will remake former Auschwitz commandant's house into learning center

A new UNESCO-backed project geared toward human rights and ending antisemitism has named Daniel Libeskind as the architect who will transform the former private home of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss into a learning center.

The project is called Auschwitz Research Center on Hate, Extremism, and Radicalization (or ARCHER) at House 88. As the name suggests, it will remake the home (which was depicted in Jonathan Glazer's 2023 film The Zone of Interest) into a space that honors the memory of the camp's victims while serving "unique opportunity to remember the victims of extremism while, at the same time, taking action to prevent the radicalization of future generations."

Getty Center is reported undamaged after new spate of Los Angeles fires

The Getty Center has reported no damage in the wake of last night’s Sepulveda Fire, which broke out on the opposite side of the 405 Freeway near its Brentwood campus in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. The new fire, which comes two weeks after the Palisades Fire scorched some parts of its grounds without causing any damage to the museum or Getty Villa, has been put out, according to a late update from the LAFD. A spokesperson from the Getty told Archinect that the new fires would not affect the museum's anticipated January 28th reopening.

Recently, the “Rebirth of Heritage” Yangjianong District Supporting Facilities Project in Haiyan County, Jiaxing City, designed by LYCS Architecture, was officially completed. The project, covering a total area of 7,211 square meters, encompasses diverse functionalities such as exhibition and training spaces, boutique homestays, and commercial facilities.

The project includes the Haiyan Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum (referred to as the "Heritage Museum"), which has recently commenced trial operations. ACSA names its new lot of winners for the 2025 Architectural Education Awards

The group of academics honored as part of the 2025 Architectural Education Awards has been announced by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in recognition of their efforts in scholarship and teaching at ACSA-accredited schools in the United States and Canada.

The field was led by University of Minnesota professor Thomas Fisher, who was named the Topaz Medalion winner in December in conjunction with the American Institute of Architects (AIA). As in past years, the 2025 program also included winners of the annual Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) Award and the Technology | Architecture + Design (TAD) Research Contribution Award.

Rounding out the selection was a five-member group, who, individually, were named winners of the Distinguished Professor Award. New AIA letter responds to White House executive order on Classicism and federal architecture

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has responded to President Donald Trump’s reinstated executive order demanding, among other things, that the General Service Administration (GSA) report to him within 60 days with a plan to reinstate the primacy of classically-inspired architecture in all new federal buildings.

One of more than two dozen new orders signed by Trump in his first days in office, his Promoting Beautiful Federal Civic Architecture remand, which offers a slightly toned-down version of an original 2020 signed order, promotes the notion of a restored American preeminence by advancing "regional, traditional, and classical architectural heritage."

The AIA letter says: "AIA is extremely concerned about any revisions that remove control from local communities; mandate official federal design preferences, or otherwise hinder design freedom; and add bureaucratic hurdles for federal buildings. AIA supports the GSA’s Guiding Principles, and we support freedom in design."

Kwong Von Glinow’s forested retreat is designed under a circular canopy

Chicago-based practice Kwong Von Glinow has offered an insight into its new residential scheme serving a “retreat in a forested clearing.” The scheme’s title, House, Some of This, Some of That, is both the formal name for the project as well as a reflection of the scheme’s architectural approach.

Currently in design development, the 2170-square-foot project centers around nine T-shaped volumes, strategically positioned on a grid. The volumes contain essential functions such as utility, storage, and wet spaces while rotating relative to each other to create distinct yet interconnected living spaces. The layout allows for a seamless flow between the family room, dining area, kitchen, office, library, reading room, and bedrooms, providing a unique sense of spatial division without traditional walls.

Archigram co-founder Dennis Crompton passes away at 89

Archigram co-founder Dennis Crompton has passed away at the age of 89. Born in Blackpool in 1935, Crompton studied architecture at Manchester University. Together with Peter Cook, Warren Chalk, Michael Webb, David Greene, and Ron Herron, Crompton established Archigram in London in 1960, renowned for their experimentations with technology, mobility, and the future of urbanism.

Crompton worked with the group until its disbanding in 1975 and continued to maintain the Archigram Archive in later decades. With Ron Herron, Crompton created the ‘Archigram: Experimental Architecture 1961-74’ exhibition in Vienna, opening in 1994, and propagated the group’s work and outlook in exhibitions and books across the world. In 2019, Archigram’s archive was acquired by the M+ museum in Hong Kong for over $2 million.

Adjaye's National Cathedral of Ghana project is reportedly under investigation

France 24 is reporting that David Adjaye’s forthcoming National Cathedral of Ghana project is being investigated by state authorities over an apparent misuse of public funds in the procurement process. The $400 million (USD) design had been at the center of a row between rival political factions in his birth country since 2023, when Adjaye told a local outlet that nothing was "hidden or opaque" in regards to its commission and the $21.37 million USD design fees his firm received for their effort.

The project's construction has allegedly stalled in the midst of Ghana's economic crisis. France 24 also reported: "Contractors have abandoned the site due to unpaid invoices, and at least five trustees have resigned from the project's board, further eroding public confidence."

Wildfire risk expert discusses cost of fire-proof retrofits

While it remains to be seen what the rebuilding will look like, fire resilience is a big concern across the country, driven in part by climate change. So what would it take to make homes less likely to catch fire, including those built decades earlier? The answer kind of depends.

Wildfire policy analyst Kimiko Barrett expounds on the "complex, wicked crisis" facing homeowners and residential designers in afflicted states such as California. She was a member of the Biden Administration’s Federal Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission, a precursor to establishing a new federal wildfire risk reduction agency via a process that is now progressing through Congress.

In November, CNN documented the myriad strategies (replacing vinyl siding, installing ember-resistant vents, etc.) that are officially recommended by the U.S. Forest Service and Department of Agriculture. The impact of the costs of such strategies, which can run upwards of $100,000, will be a pivitol factor in the hastened rebuilding process set to come after the recent Los Angeles Fires that destroyed more than 12,000 structures.

AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index shrinks again for December

The new AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index (ABI) for the month of December has recorded a decline to 44.1 following two consecutive flat readings in October and November. For December, inquiries into new projects continued to increase at a relatively slow rate, while the value of newly signed design contracts was shown to have decreased overall.

"While there were signs that the design cycle was bottoming out in the fourth quarter, the December reading indicated a step back," Kermit Baker, the Chief Economist for the AIA, shares. "There remains considerable uncertainty as to the feasibility of many planned construction projects, so the wait-and-see period is extending into 20-25."

Food-inspired furniture design obsessions are taking over social media

The New York Times is following the growing community of food-inspired furniture obsessives on TikTok whose love for pillaging HomeGoods and other retailers in search of stools designed to look like burgers or fruit has grown into what might be taken as a full-blown re-embrace of kitsch nationwide.

One Long Island-based member says: "I sort of based my entire life and personality around this silly burger stool. I think a lot of millennials specifically or older Gen Zs grew up with the 'beige' décor, once we hit the scene, we made it OK to decorate fun and silly."

And it's also very lucrative for the home goods retail industry. TJX Companies has reported a net revenue of $40 billion in the first nine months of FY 2025 alone.

Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission and RIBA reveal five-team design shortlist

The movement to memorialize all 72 victims of the Grenfell Fire tragedy in London has named a group of five architects and designers who will compete for the chance to deliver a memorial near the site of the deadly 2017 blaze.

Together with the Royal Institute of Architects (RIBA), the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission announced the following five teams to the shortlist along with its intentions to name an overall winner later this summer:

Following our previous look at an opening for a Project Captain at Practice, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for the 2025 Summer Internship Program at KieranTimberlake.

According to the firm, the internship “provides a meaningful opportunity for students to participate in a range of professional design activities and to gain broad exposure to ideas that push the practice of architecture forward.” Based in Philadelphia, the internship may see interns contribute to the planning, design, and documentation of projects as well as engage with the firm’s research group. Candidates should be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in architecture or a related design field and be available for a minimum of ten weeks. The application window will close on March 1, 2025.
