Mission Statement
DW Freedom is the media development think tank at DW Akademie. We gather data and insights and generate strategies for resilient information ecosystems and freedom of expression for everyone. We work together with our regional departments and partner organizations from around the world.
DW Akademie is the center for media development at Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international broadcaster.
Who we are
We are a group of journalists, media professionals, researchers, human rights experts, and international development professionals who generate ideas and evidence-based strategies to create healthier information spaces across the globe. We find solutions, shape discussions and advise political actors.
What we do
DW Freedom invests in research, builds networks, and advocates for free and open media systems across the globe. Together with our partners, we strive to realize everyone’s right to express their own ideas and views. This includes the freedom to access information and the freedom to participate in civic life. We believe in the value of quality media education and independent journalism.
Our annual State of the Media Development Report assesses the media development sector’s compliance with OECD’s Development Co-operation Principles for Relevant and Effective Support to Media and the Information Environment. It highlights challenges and best practices, aiming to improve the effectiveness of media development efforts.
Our thematic focus areas
We have identified three main global challenges where we can best contribute with our work – widening the debate and finding constructive ways forward.
AI for Good Media: This initiative focuses on integrating AI in the media sector in an inclusive and human rights-based manner. By involving experts from various fields, DW Freedom aims to develop ethical and inclusive AI strategies that benefit the Global Majority.
Financing of Journalism: AI companies increasingly use journalistic content without compensating publishers. Addressing the financial challenges faced by journalism, DW Freedom advocates for fair compensation for news publishers. This is crucial for maintaining high-quality, trustworthy journalism that serves the public interest.
Dialogue Against Polarization: DW Freedom examines the shifting dynamics of public discourse. By promoting inclusive and constructive public dialogue, DW Freedom aims to counteract polarization and disinformation. This helps amplify underrepresented voices and fosters a healthier public discourse.
Where we work
DW Freedom works closely with DW Akademie’s regional departments, offices and representatives as well as a network of over 180 partner organizations in more than 70 countries. This enables us to reach millions of people worldwide. Together, we aim for a common goal: resilient information ecosystems and freedom of expression for everyone.
